Are you a citizen of the United States?

Questions about citizenship are illegal.

However if you asked this question the interviewer probably just wants to know if you are eligible to work in the US.

So, your answer might be: "I am eligible to work in the US for any employer" or "I am would need visa assistance/sponsorship before I can start"

There is a big misconsumption as there is no illeagal interview questions, people can ask anything, BUT they CAN NOT discriminate based on candidate's answer. I belive asking if candidate is US citizen is absolutely leagal if company doesn't using this information in hiring decision making.
