Strategic Statement: Few of us ever find ourselves in a position where we work for two supervisors. Keep your response framed as a positive learning experience.
Sample Response: It was an unfortunate situation where there was no trust between my direct supervisor and their supervisor. I was placed in the middle as my direct supervisor was busy making sure they were covering themselves while their supervisor was pressing me to find out what was going on. As much as possible, I made it clear when I had to deal with my supervisor’s supervisor. I informed both supervisors of the requests and my actions. I felt it necessary to diminish my role as a go-between ‘pawn’, and assert my position as someone who was interested in working for the good-of-the-division. Although the situation did not improve between the two, I was able to retain my ethical stand on the issue and demonstrate my dedication to the workplace-as-a-whole.
