Strategy Statement:

The interviewer wants to know how you feel about someone who meets expectations, and to get a better sense of your managerial philosophies.

Sample Response:

“Meeting expectations” is the norm. That is the anticipated basic level of performance. It is the “C” on our report card. Going beyond that level demonstrates interest, commitment and passion. Those are the qualities that I like to draw-out in the workplace. The difference is that the co-worker or employee has chosen to personally invest in the idea or project... to put a piece of themselves into the work. I try to always make an effort to acknowledge the employee’s commitment (rather than focus merely on the task performed) whenever expectations are exceeded.
