I encourage criticism, and firmly believe in the notion that criticism can be constructive. A supervisor’s responsibility is to use feedback constructively, and work toward forward progress and improvement. I have held firm to this belief as both an employee and a supervisor. I once had a supervisor who guided me (through performance evaluations and constructive criticism) toward the philosophy that less-is-more in grant proposal writing. As I came to better-understand his perspective that clarity and directness was preferable to narrative style and “information dumping” (his term!), my technical writing abilities sharpened dramatically. A 380-page document became a 250-page document, and garnered better scores from readers!
