The kernel re-compilation process lately has become a trivial matter. Not too long ago I updated a production RedHat 9 system to FC4 over ssh in under an hour. A crazy move, I know, but it worked like a charm. Today I updated my Gentoo kernel to 2.6.20 by typing a couple of commands (genkernel, etc) and rebooting. Like I said, trivial.
